CITB mock test and HS&E practice for Operatives
Practise with original scenarios, read a clear reason for each answer, then time yourself against the 50-question, 45-minute format.
What the CITB HS&E test is
The Health, Safety and Environment test is run by CITB. It is separate from CSCS, which issues the cards. Many workers take it as part of the card pathway. CITB describes three test types: Operatives, Specialist and Managers and Professionals. This site covers the Operatives route.
For the card and the test you need, use the CSCS health and safety test page and the official Card Finder. Do not rely on a practice site to tell you which test to take.
A practical preparation routine
- Read the scope first. Use the five public labels as a checklist and note which ones you know least about.
- Answer under time. Practise in short timed sets so the 45-minute pace feels normal before a full paper.
- Review every mistake. For each wrong or unsure answer, write down the hazard and the control that should have been chosen.
- Revisit the weak areas. Repeat the topics you missed until your answers are steady.
Our safety guides outline the practical control ideas behind the topics. The free questions show the same reasoning on ten items.

Common questions
What does the CITB HS&E test cover?
The test checks a minimum level of health, safety and environmental awareness for people working on UK construction sites. The Operatives route uses five public knowledge-area labels. See the official CITB page for current scope.
How should I prepare for the test?
Read the official test information, practise with timed questions, review every wrong answer and keep a short list of topics you still find hard. Practise until you can explain why the safest answer is safest, not just recognise it.
Does this site include official questions?
No. Practice questions are original and based on public HSE and GOV.UK guidance. The site does not use CITB or CSCS question banks.
